Huge Progress: Drawing, Cutting and Scarfing the Backbone of our Wharram Catamaran

Hi folks,

We have been chomping at the bit to share the latest video in our Boat Build Series with you all and here it is!

Marc, a student from the traditional wooden boat building school Atelier l’Enfer, joined us for part of his work placement last week, helping us to leap ahead at a very important stage of the build: drawing, cutting and scarfing the backbone of our 12m Narai Mk IV catamaran.

Thanks to visits during the past few weeks by Simone and Pascal M, we have now also near-finished the wood drying chamber—the dehumidifier arrives this week along with some more timber to build drying racks. Simone and I should finish it off before the weekend just in time for Remy to come in Saturday to finish scarfing the starboard hull’s backbone.

We’ve tidied up the job list sheet mentioned in the video—it’s now publicly accessible to view HERE. We will be maintaining this sheet month-by-month, and volunteers are welcome to contact us if there’s a particular job you are interested in participating in.

The sheet of final measurements will be tidied up by Remy shortly and added to this website, too, which may be of interest to anyone thinking of following in our footsteps and building a Narai Mk IV.

Things are really ramping up on the build now despite Remy going back to work full time since breaking his neck last June, and you will find me and visiting volunteers in the boatyard most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with Remy taking over on the weekends.

At this point I just want to say a HUGE thank you to every single one of you reading, watching, volunteering, donating tools (yes, you can donate tools!) and contributing financially to the project. This boat is a holistic sum of all of us and, though the building journey is pretty damn fun and exciting, we cannot wait until the day we launch on the water and hope many of you will be there with us in person on that special day or joining us on voyage legs of the upcoming circumnavigation!

An extra thanks to Simone for the beautiful photos below shot on film beside all of the hard work you have contributed these past months.

Cheers,

Angie
